Winner Story
As a gay man in Nigeria, Edafe faced persecution and extreme violence. Fearing for his life, he sought asylum in the United States in 2016 and spent months in detention. Eventually, he was able to secure a bed and a job through connections to activists and friends. Today, Edafe is a global gay rights and immigration activist, dedicated to advocating and creating solutions for other vulnerable LGBTQ+ refugees arriving in New York City.
There are more than 40,000 refugees in New York City. Those applying for political asylum — especially individuals who fear violence or death in their home countries — find few resources to help them integrate into New York City while awaiting immigration decisions. This is especially true for LGBTQ refugees.
Edafe is a leading voice on the issue of displacement, supporting people through transition and rebuilding their lives. In 2020 Edafe founded Refuge America, with a vision of strengthening America as a place of welcome for displaced LGBTQ people. The organization offers culturally competent services and training to displaced people to help them share their stories and advocate for themselves.
In 2024, Edafe announced his bid for New York City Council in Upper Manhattan’s District 7, running on issues of affordable housing, access to healthcare, and public safety. In his adopted home, Edafe is continuing to find new ways to inspire, organize, and make lasting change.
