Flooding in New York City is becoming more frequent and damaging. Recent intensive storms have made clear that aging infrastructure is insufficient at managing increased rainfalls, and specific home types such as basement apartments are especially at risk. While the city is investing in large-scale climate infrastructure, these strategies leave households out of the solution, where flooding can cause significant harm.
Field Form, founded by Sam in 2017, began as a gardening business that has evolved in response to stormwater issues affecting residents. Sam is developing a data visualization tool that maps historical streams, soil types, and sewer backup reports to help pinpoint flooding exposure at the property level. To address these risks, he has developed modular backyard-scale flooding strategies that include dry wells, improved roof gutters and downspouts, and garden redesigns. Flood Clubs—neighbor-led groups that share, coordinate, and co-invest in flood solutions at the block level— are Sam’s newest projects. The need for these groups stems from the recognition that water doesn’t care about property lines like people do. Ultimately, Field Form is bridging a gap between citywide planning and local needs - offering practical, data-informed, and community-based solutions to reduce flooding where it’s felt most.
