Portrait of Lorenzo Tijerina

Sunset Park is one of New York City’s most remarkably diverse neighborhoods, home to over 115,000 residents, with enclaves that speak English, Spanish and Mandarin. Lorenzo has called it home for over a decade, and what once started as a love for his adopted neighborhood became a trilingual community newspaper built to bridge the gap between these parallel neighbors that don’t always intersect.

The Sunset Post is a free, hyperlocal print paper that invites contributors to cover community stories impacting residents from local politics to small business spotlights to community safety. Volunteers help distribute thousands of the monthly issues to residents, and writers range from high school students to seasoned journalists, each writing in their native language. At a time when independent local journalism is being challenged across the country, Lorenzo is invested in telling the local New York stories that might otherwise go unnoticed.
