Jibreel grew up in Canarsie and intimately understood the impact of gun violence. When he saw that Canarsie was left out of citywide gun violence prevention programs, he organized his neighbors, lobbied elected officials, and helped secure $1.6 million for public safety. That win became one of the first major victories led by The Flossy Organization, the nonprofit Jibreel founded to drive local policy change and train residents to lead grassroots advocacy campaigns of their own.
At its core, The Flossy begins with listening to what the neighborhood needs. From there, it turns community concerns into targeted campaigns that create real impact. Right now, Jibreel and his team are focused on two priorities for the neighborhood: ferry service to Canarsie and funding for a community center. Through its year-round training programs, The Flossy equips neighbors - young and old - with the tools, strategies, and confidence to take the lead. With community support and a growing advocacy toolkit, Jibreel is creating a model that could help neighborhoods across New York fight for what they need.
